The advanced laparoscopic surgery course is held four times each year,
normally in March, June, August and October. It is held over a five-day
period, beginning on Monday morning and ending on Friday afternoon.
Laparoscopic surgical techniques are introduced and taught in a ‘dry’ lab
setting. Techniques such as extra-corporeal and intra-corporeal knot tying
and suturing are demonstrated and practiced, along with the techniques
of laparoscopic instrument handling and basic surgical procedures.
The course includes eight live surgical sessions, where advanced
laparoscopic surgical set-ups and surgical procedures are demonstrated.
The participants can interact with the operating surgeons both during
the theatre sessions and during the breaks. The operating lists are
structured to allow optimum time usage for teaching.
A second session of laboratory-based training enables participants to
employ the techniques demonstrated and learned, on animal models.
